Εμ. Macron: ‘Extension of more than 50 years for as many nuclear reactors as possible’

French President Emanuel Macron wants to “extend the life of all reactors whose lives can be extended” beyond 50 years, if possible, he announced today, making a change in relation to the 2018 targets for closing almost twelve reactors.

“I have made two strong decisions: to extend the service life of all nuclear reactors that can extend their operation without compromising safety” and “that no nuclear reactor in production state should be shut down in the future (.. “unless for security reasons,” said Macron, from Belfort, in eastern France, who said he had asked the French electricity company EDF to “study the conditions for the extension (operation) beyond 50 years”.

The French president also said he wanted to build six new nuclear reactors EPR (European Pressure Water Reactors) and is considering building another eight, with the launch of the first new generation EPR2 reactor expected around 2035.

The reactors will be supplemented by small modular reactors (SMRs) and “innovative” reactors that produce less waste, aiming at “25 gigawatts of new nuclear power by 2050”, a “revolution” justified by rising electricity needs.

“Starting today, we will start a program to start (build) new nuclear reactors,” he said.
