Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trindade said today that Russia could not be a constructive partner in the G20, the Group of 20 rich countries, due to its invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Trinto said the G20 leaders were discussing Russia’s involvement because the war in Ukraine “upset economic growth for everyone around the world and (Russia) did not can be a constructive partner “.
Any attempt by the US, Canada and other Western allies to exclude Russia would most likely be vetoed by others at the G20, which includes China, India and Saudi Arabia, among others.
Instead of ruling out Russia, some countries are considering bypassing Moscow’s presence at the G20 this year, sources told Reuters last week.
“The bottom line is that we can not act as if nothing has happened with (Russian President) Vladimir Putin sitting at the table pretending that everything is fine,” Trinto said.
US President Joe Biden has said he believes Russia should be excluded from the G20.
The Kremlin said last week that nothing terrible would happen if the United States and its allies oust Russia from the G20 because many of its members are in an economic war with Moscow anyway.
