Israel and the Arab states that share its concerns about Iran should develop a joint military force under the auspices of the United States, according to the text of the speech of Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gandz in view of the visit of US President Joe Biden to the region.
Iran’s nuclear program and the so far fruitless efforts to revive the 2015 international treaty to control Tehran’s nuclear program will be on the agenda of talks between the US president in Israel and Saudi Arabia next month.
In the text of his speech, Benny Gandz refers to Israel’s security ties with the Gulf countries, which were strengthened in the context of the development of diplomatic relations between them in 2020 with the support of Washington, as well as with Egypt and Jordan, and in an effort to further strengthen this cooperation.
“What is needed is not just cooperation, but also the development of a US-led regional force that will strengthen all parties involved,” he said.
The text does not specify whether the term “force” refers to a joint military force or to the development of general joint military capabilities.
“We are constantly working on this for the security of the Israeli people.”
Saudi Arabia has voiced its support for the so-called Abrahamic Agreements, under which the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain established relations with Israel two years ago. However, Riyadh did not proceed until the official recognition of Israel.
