Russian troops have seized the town of Melitopol in the southeastern Ukrainian province of Zaporizhia, the Russian Defense Ministry said today.
The ministry also said Russia had used air and cruise missiles to launch overnight strikes against military targets in Ukraine.
According to the same source, Russian troops hit hundreds of military infrastructure targets and destroyed several aircraft and dozens of tanks and armor and artillery vehicles.
British Undersecretary of Defense John Heappey said Britain did not believe Russian forces had captured the town of Melitopolis.
“All the targets of the first day of Russia and even Melitopolis, which the Russians claim to have captured, we can not see anything to substantiate this, they are still in Ukrainian hands,” he told BBC radio.
