The United States is interested in upgrading energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean, said US Undersecretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Erica Olson during the Economist Summit in New York. Asked about the prospect of building the EastMed gas pipeline, she said: “We are just interested in upgrading energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Europe in general.”
In this context, Ms. Olson noted that the United States supports the energy security of Greece and that it manages almost half the volume of liquefied natural gas imports to our country. He added that the US is working with the EU on its energy diversification and has committed to additional supplies of liquefied natural gas, which will reach 15 billion cubic meters by the end of 2022.
More broadly, he underlined that the US relations with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean are at a historically high level, emphasizing the importance of the 3 + 1 figure (Greece, Cyprus, Israel + USA). He referred to the strong US-Greek defense ties, as reflected in the five-year extension of the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA), and stressed that the two countries’ armed forces continue to strengthen their interoperability. Finally, he spoke of the crisis in Ukraine, referring to a barbaric war by Vladimir Putin, which not only poses a threat to collective security, but has also led to a refugee, food and energy crisis.
