Aaron Taylor-Johnson has reportedly received a “formal offer” to play James Bond.
Eon Productions, responsible for the 007 films, is hoping the 33-year-old actor will accept the coveted role, played by Daniel Craig for the past 15 years, and it is believed that filming for a new film in the franchise could begin later this year.
“Bond is Aaron’s role, should he wish to accept it. The formal offer is on the table and they are waiting for a response,” a source told British newspaper The Sun.
“According to Eon, Aaron will sign his contract in the next few days and they can start preparing for the big announcement,” he continued.
The actor, who is married to director Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, is the public favorite for the UK bookmaker job, and Henry Cavill and Idris Elba have also been mentioned as possible replacements for Daniel.
Aaron recently admitted it was “charming” to be heavily attached to the iconic film role.
Speaking recently to Numero magazine about the speculation, he said: “I think it's charming and wonderful that people see me in this role. I consider that a great compliment.”
In August, Aaron clarified that he was not focused on speculation that he could be the next Bond.
“I have to follow the beat of my own drum. It's my own path, which seems intuitive to me. I have never made a decision based on the perspectives, judgments or expectations of others. You go crazy if you do that,” he told Esquire magazine at the time.
“Your sense of worth and soul are gone. You need to understand what is fundamental to you and what feels right, and you need to stay on track with what is present in front of you,” he continued.
When asked what he thought about taking on the role of Bond, he said: “I just focus on the things I can get my hands on right now. What’s in front of me now.”
