10 Celebrities Who “came out” until after they turned 30

Few issues are more private and intimate than sexuality and gender identity, and each person goes through their own discovery processes. Fortunately, today, living authentically, without fear of loving who you love, is much easier for young people. However, this has only been possible in recent years, as for a long time, many people had to hide essential parts of who they are for fear of retaliation.

For this reason, and for many more reasons, there are people who “come out of the closet” once they are adults. There is no age limit to start living the way you want, taking pride in who you are and these 10 celebrities prove it to us.

1. Ian McKellen

The acclaimed and beloved actor publicly declared his sexuality when he was almost 50 years old, on a British radio show discussing a bill that harmed gay people. After this, he has always expressed his pride and relief that he is finally living authentically.

I have never met a gay person who regrets ‘coming out’ – including myself. Life finally begins to make sense when you are open and honest.

2. Neil Patrick Harris

The actor, best known for his role as Barney in How I Met Your Mother, made his sexuality public in 2003, when he was 33 years old. She currently has a beautiful family with her husband, actor and chef David Burkta, with whom she stars in spectacular costumes with her two children.

I am happy to dispel any rumors or misunderstandings and I am very proud to say that I am a very content ‘gay’ man living my life to the fullest and I feel very fortunate to work with wonderful people in the business that I love.

3. Jodie Foster

The actress, who has always kept her private life far apart from her professional career, publicly acknowledged her sexuality in 2013, at age 50, at the Golden Globes, as part of her speech of appreciation for her Cecil B. DeMille award, that is given to actors with outstanding cinematographic trajectories.

I hope you are not disappointed that I did not give a great coming out speech, because I already came out about a thousand years ago, in the Stone Age, when a young woman was telling her trusted friends, family and workers to, gradually , end up telling it very proud to everyone she knew.

4. Chavela Vargas

The Mexican singer-songwriter publicly expressed her sexuality for the first time in 2000, at the age of 81. Although she herself accepted that it was never something she hid, this was the first time she acknowledged it publicly and openly.

I have had to fight to be me and to be respected, and carrying that stigma, for me, is a pride. Bear the name of lesbian. I am not bragging, I am not proclaiming it, but I do not deny it.

5. Jim Parsons

In 2012, at the age of 39, the actor publicly acknowledged his sexuality in an interview with The New York Times. Despite the fact that “the news passed very quickly”, it was a very important event for him that allowed him to take control of his private life.

I was scared. I wasn’t afraid of losing my job and I wasn’t scared enough to deny my sexuality. But I was scared enough that my mission was not to talk about it.

6. Caitlyn Jenner

In 2015, the gender transition process of the athlete and television personality culminated, and in June, at 65, she presented herself to the world with a cover of Vanity Fair whose caption read “Call me Caitlyn.”

If I was on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never did anything about it, I would be thinking, “You ruined your whole life. You never dealt with yourself ”and I don’t want that to happen.

7. George Takei

The actor of Star Trek He made his sexuality public in 2005, when he was 68 years old. At the same time, she introduced her longtime partner, whom she married in 2008 when the California Supreme Court struck down the law that prohibited same-sex marriage.

The world has changed since I was a young teenager feeling ashamed for being ‘gay’. Same-sex marriage is now a political issue, which was unthinkable when I was young.

8. Robin Roberts

The presenter of Good Morning America made his sexuality public very simply at the age of 53 by including a thank you to his girlfriend in a post on Facebook commemorating 100 days of his bone marrow transplant. After that, she received a lot of public support from such figures as Michelle Obama.

I am grateful for my entire family, my girlfriend of many years, Amber, and my friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.

9. Ricky Martin

It is possibly the most famous case. The singer had suffered from speculation about his sexuality for many years until, in 2010, at the age of 38, he made his sexuality public. Today he is married and has four children.

I am proud to say that I am a lucky gay man. I feel very blessed to be who I am.

10. Ellen DeGeneres

Although it may seem impossible today, the television presenter kept her sexuality a secret for many years. It was until 1997, when she was 39, that she made it public through an interview with the magazine Time.

It was terrifying. I wondered ‘Would I still be famous, would people still love me if they knew I’m gay?’ And my fear was that the answer was no, which made me feel very ashamed that I was hiding something. I was embarrassed that I couldn’t feel honest and be who I really am, and I no longer wanted to pretend to be someone else to make people like me.
