10 Gbps in a smartphone. Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon X65 5G modem on “upgradeable architecture” for iPhone 13

Qualcomm today unveiled its most advanced 5G modem, the Snapdragon X65 5G. The most important feature of the novelty is support for a very high data transfer rate of 10 Gb / s at peak (at download). And while at this stage and with the current development of 5G networks, this speed seems to be fantastic, the Snapdragon X65 5G has a lot of potential for the future.

The novelty was the first 5G modem in the world to provide such a high data transfer rate. But that’s not all. The baseband processor is built on the so-called “upgradeable architecture” – which means that new functions and capabilities can be added by software (firmware update). This is how the Snapdragon X65 5G will be brought to the 3GPP 16 standard.

Also, Snapdragon X65 5G received an improved fourth generation QTM545 mmWave antenna module, which is more powerful and at the same time less energy-consuming. It is also reported about the use of AI technologies in the device – for example, the modem itself determines the overlap of antennas by the hands of the smartphone user and, in accordance with this, redirects the signal to free antennas to maintain maximum connection stability and speed.

Qualcomm has already launched trial production of the Snapdragon X65 5G, but the modem will not appear in finished devices until the end of the year. It may well be that the promising flagships iPhone 13 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first production models with Snapdragon X65 5G.
