In 2021, a lot of high-budget games were released, in the shadow of which less expected, but not worse projects could go unnoticed. Collected here 10 of these titles that are worth trying if you missed them.
Yakuza Remastered Collection

This year, parts 3, 4 and 5 of the series first came out on PC, and even in 1080p and 60 FPS. Now PC gamers will be able to fully immerse themselves in the plot of the Japanese franchise. Yakuza is distinguished by a storytelling with vivid and memorable characters, unusual, sometimes even absurd humor, which does not destroy the serious tone of the story. It accurately conveys the atmosphere and culture of Japan, and it pays attention to even the smallest details. The city streets filled with colors, together with high-quality sound design and authentic attributes, make you want to stay in the game for tens of hours. In your free time from story missions, you can engage in exciting side tasks – teaching members of a punk music group the appropriate behavior or singing karaoke. Much emphasis in the series is placed on hand-to-hand combat – they are everywhere, but thanks to several styles of battles, a variety of techniques and colorfulness, they do not get boring.
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139

The original 2010 NieR Replicant, the predecessor to Automata, was only released in the Japanese market for the PS3. The re-release under the name NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 makes it possible to play on a PC and has greatly improved visually relative to the original version. Gameplay is a simple slasher with shallow leveling and sometimes even monotonous game mechanics, the game should be launched for the sake of the plot. To complete the picture, NieR Replicant will have to go through several times, though not from the beginning, but from the middle.
It Takes Two

It Takes Two, which won the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2021, aims to be played by two players together. Nowadays there are not so many similar games tailored for co-op, in which It Takes Two is unique. The adventure platformer offers different locations with specific mechanics, so the game doesn’t feel monotonous. Each time, both characters get different abilities, and it is possible to complete the levels only by working in harmony. It Takes Two is not afraid to experiment with genres, which is why many tasks differ from each other.
Subnautica: Below Zero

The continuation of the first part of the underwater adventures gives the player all the same opportunities to explore the ocean, survive in it, while the location remains the same – the Arctic planet. The plot develops the events of the original, you have to figure out what happened in the scene. For a daring exploration of the world, the game rewards with answers to riddles. Subnautica: Below Zero makes you feel lonely in a huge space and at the same time admire the beauty.
Valheim

The exploration game, inspired by the mythology of Scandinavia, has prepared for gamers an open and procedurally generated world with a variety of biomes. You can play alone or with 10 other people. Valheim allows you to extract resources and spend them on the construction of buildings or the creation of weapons that will help in battles with the mythical inhabitants of the world. You can get to the far corners of the map on a ship created from the collected materials.
The Forgotten City

A first-person adventure detective tied in a time loop and set in the setting of ancient Rome. The player will play the role of a traveler from the future and unravel the mystery of the city’s curse. The Forgotten City is remembered for its high-quality story and vivid characters with whom it is interesting to have a dialogue. Separately, we can note the compact but well-designed world, as well as the non-linearity of the game – there are several endings here.
Chivalry 2

The multiplayer first-person slasher in a medieval setting is designed for up to 64 players, so every battle is huge. At the same time, there are several modes and locations, so the conditions of the battles will not be boring. The characters are divided into several classes – many players are familiar with this mechanic from other popular shooters. The hero, in turn, can be customized, and in detail. There are a lot of weapons here, the combat system is easy to master, but you won’t be able to hone it to perfection in just a couple of hours.
Life Is Strange: True Colors

The new part of the franchise is not directly related to the previous ones, but has some references. Otherwise, this is a fresh story about a heroine who, with the help of her ability to see the feelings of other people, unravels a mysterious incident. The scene of the action is a small and cozy city in America. The gameplay here is the same as before in the series – quests, dialogues and mini-games. It’s worth considering that this is still a story-driven game.
Persona 5 Strikers

This is a direct sequel to Persona 5, so it’s worth checking out the previous installment before starting the game. The project stands out for its original visual style and decent soundtrack. In battles, this is a dynamic slasher with several enemies at once. You can while away the breaks from them by exploring the locations and looking for items important for the advancement in them, as well as pumping and dialogues – after all, there is a full-fledged plot with characters from Persona 5.
Lost Judgement

The sequel to the spin-off to the Yakuza series, which I already mentioned in the article, definitely deserves to be spent in it. The game is not available on all platforms, but it would be a mistake not to include it on this list, because this is a great adventure for dozens of hours. Unlike Yakuza in Lost Judgment, the player will have to take on the role of a detective investigating some rather dark events. The setting is still the same, but the characters are different. In fact, this is beat ’em up, but in addition to dynamic battles, Lost Judgment carries away with a serious plot. This is a well-developed project that is pleasant and interesting to play.
