10 police killed in Myanmar: ethnic armed groups pledge support for protest

In Myanmar, an alliance of ethnic armed groups attacked a police station, killing at least 10 police officers. This is reported by Reuters with reference to local media.

A police station in Naungmon, Shan State, was attacked this morning, April 10, by the Arakan Army, the Taang National Liberation Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army.

According to various publications, from 10 to 14 police officers were killed. Representatives of the military junta that seized power in the country did not comment on the incident.

Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, at least 600 protesters have been killed in Myanmar, Reuters notes.

More than 10 armed groups have declared the junta illegal and said they sided with the protesters.

Parliamentarians, many of whom have gone into hiding after the coup, have announced plans to form a government of national unity, which will include ethnic leaders. Online talks on joint resistance to the junta are under way.

  • Sanctions against the junta were imposed by the United States, Great Britain and the EU.
