So when, if not now, to release a series based on one of the most cinematic games, The Last of Us? Viewers will be told about how people survive in a zombie apocalypse caused by a mutated parasitic cordyceps fungus. The game was praised for its authentic depiction of the environment with the gloomy atmosphere of quiet cities, high-quality sound design, and most importantly – for the two main characters Joel and Ellie, who brought the world to life on the screen. In the TV adaptation, they will be played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The project’s showrunner was Craig Mazin, writer and executive producer of another HBO hit series Chernobyl. What’s more, Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us video game as well as the Uncharted series of games, was directly involved in the development of the TV adaptation.

The most anticipated project in the Star Wars universe in 2023 is, of course, Ahsoka, a series about the adventures of Anakin Skywalker’s student Ahsoka Tano. This Jedi has become a fan favorite since her debut in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. You should not worry about the quality of her solo series, because Dave Filoni was involved in its development and filming. It was he who developed the character in the animated series. In addition, it was he who, while working on The Mandalorian, along with John Farvo, achieved a cameo character in The Book of Boba Fett. Rosario Dawson, who played Ahsoka, will reprise her role. Interestingly, the project announced the participation of Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader from the original films). Most likely Disney will use their famous rejuvenation technology to create some memorable flashback scenes. Although, of course, all fans dream about the battle of Ahsoka and Vader beyond animation.

Limited mini-series from the HBO channel, which is famous for the high quality of such projects. “Love and Death” is based on a true story that took place in the 1980s in Texas (USA). Then a decent-looking housewife, Candy Montgomery, for no reason at all, kills her close friend Betty Gore with an ax. They had a lot in common: they both sang in the church choir, their husbands worked in Silicon Valley, and their daughters, like their mothers, were best friends. However, terrible secrets were hidden behind the cover of an ideal family friendship, and just one sudden conflict could lead to a real tragedy. “Love and Death” will try to figure out what exactly happened that day. The series stars Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch from Marvel) and Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), while their husbands are played by Jesse Plemons and Patrick Fugit.

The most anticipated Marvel series of 2022 is arguably Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. In the comics, it was one of the most global events involving a huge number of characters. However, keep in mind that the Skrulls, who were the villains of this story in the comics, are presented differently in the MCU. Also, the creators of the project themselves noted that it would be more a study of the elements of political paranoia that were present in the original source, rather than a film adaptation of a mass brawl. Nevertheless, the series will become a kind of crossover, connected with several subsequent films at once. In addition, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke and other stars will appear in it. Marvel has several more interesting series planned for 2023, for example, Echo, where Charlie Cox will return to the role of Daredevil, and the second season of Loki.

In 2021, Denis Villeneuve was finally able to make a decent adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. And although the film is not without flaws (weak dynamics, nuanced work), it is still one of the best representatives of thoughtful sci-fi films in recent years. Movies like this are rare. And while the audience is preparing for the second part, the director, after long delays in November 2022, finally started filming the pilot episode of the Dune: The Sisterhood prequel series. The plot will be based on the 2012 novel Sisters of Dune. This means that the audience will be shown the history of the secret women’s order “Bene Gesserit”. All of its members are owners of incredible abilities. And the main task of the order is to bring out a person with the help of a selective genetic program, whose brain would work like a living supercomputer capable of predicting the future. The series will help understand the importance of Paul Atreides to the world of Dune.

Fallout

Another iconic video game series that I’m adapting for television in 2023 will be Fallout. This is the legendary role-playing game that spawned a whole genre of isometric tactical open-world adventure games. Its main feature was the setting, which combines elements of Western, dystopia, retrofuturism and post-apocalypse. The lucky ones who survived the nuclear disaster in the underground shelters have come out and are now fighting radioactive monsters and each other. The showrunners are Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, writers of the recently canceled Westworld and producers of Peripherals. They repeatedly confessed their love for Fallout and emphasized that they devoted countless hours to it. The producers of Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios, who developed and released the game franchise from the third part, also promised to follow the quality.

It is said that it will consist of three hour and a half episodes, each with an estimated budget of $20 million. That is, according to the concept, it will be something in the spirit of Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch. Winston, originally played by Ian McShane, this time will be played by Colin Woodell, which will be a great test of the young actor’s talent. The project also attracts by the fact that one of the central roles should be played by Mel Gibson. One of the screenwriters of the series is Derek Kolstad, who worked on the second part of the franchise, as well as on the film “Nobody” by Ilya Naishuller.

The series that tells the story of the popular punk band “Korol i Shut”, known for their love of folk motifs. About the formation of the team, the ups and downs on its path to success and the difficult relationships of the group members, especially Mikhail “Gorshka” Gorshenev and Andrey “Knyaz” Knyazev. The latter, by the way, acted as the producer of the project and promised the authenticity of biographical details. The group created the world of dark fairy tales, and its members became the idols of millions of people. Elements of fantasy from the songs, the creators of the series promised to carefully weave into the story. Gorshenev and Knyazev will be played by young actors – Konstantin Plotnikov and Vlad Konoplev, respectively. In the series, of course, the other members of the group (“Balu”, “Lieutenant”, “Yasha”, “Renegade”), and the wife of the deceased in 2013 “Pot” will play a significant role.

This series from Netflix will be another rethinking of the cult animated series of the 00s about four nations, each of which controls one of the elements: fire, water, earth and air. One day, the ruler of the Fire Nation decided to take over all the other lands. Only Avatar could stop him – the only person who is able to control all four elements. The animated series has already been tried to be transferred to the big screens, but the adaptation of M. Night Shyamalan was, to put it mildly, not very good. In theory, Netflix was more attentive to the selection of actors and even brought in the work of the authors of the original – Michael DiMartino and Brian Konietzko. However, these two left the production after some time due to creative differences with the producers, which, of course, is very alarming. But the picture should definitely be all right, because about $ 120 million was allocated for the production of the first season, and for filming scenes with visual effects, the world’s largest installation of LED panels was erected.

“The Fall of the House of Usher”

  • Platform: Netflix.
