10 things to do to truly celebrate Women’s Day

It was 1977 when the UN formalized, for 8 March, the institution of an international day for women’s rights. Not a party, as we commonly call it, but a symbolic anniversary to reflect on the condition of women and on achieving gender equality.

Just to regain the original spirit of this symbolic date, we can take a break from our daily routine and spend some time doing things that celebrate women.

We have selected ten to start from, it’s up to you to find more!

1- PARTICIPATE IN THE #CHOOSETOCHALLENGE

The challenge was launched byInternational Women’s day, the site that coordinates all the global initiatives for the day of 8 March. This year he asked everyone to post a photo with a raised hand on their social networks, followed by the hashtag #choosetochallenge, to protest against gender inequality and inequality. Of course, men are also welcome to participate!

2- SEND AN EMAIL OR A MESSAGE TO THE WOMEN WHO SUPPORT US

Let’s think of our friends or work colleagues: each of them contributes in some way to our daily life and maybe pushes us to improve or feel less alone. Why not thank them with a short message?

3- EVENING FILM, BUT FEMALE

Why not organize a themed movie night? Choose at least one film that has a woman as a director or that sees her as the protagonist. Then, perhaps, to enrich the evening, a nice zoom call with friends to discuss and confront each other. I believe I will do a rewatch of Lady Bird of Greta Gerwig.

4- BECOME A WIKIPEDIA EDITOR.

Ok, I know this might sound strange but you know that only 19% of the biographies that appear on Wikipedia is it about women and 90% of the site editors are male? Given the data, if this appeals to you and you think it could do for you, follow the instructions on Wikipedia and choose a female character to analyze: the world will be grateful to you.

5- DRESS YOURSELF AS YOUR ICON

Whether you are in dad, smart working or in the office, why not take the opportunity to show off a look inspired by your favorite female icon. If it sounds too complicated (maybe you love it Frida Kahlo and I understand that it is not easy to replicate her look in everyday life), remember that the color of the suffragettes is white: a total white will be symbolic and effect. Any ideas? Jennifer Lopez during the inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden (no, the color of the outfit was not random!).

6- EVENING GAMES ONLY WOMEN

Personally, I’m a board game entity. Obviously you cannot meet at home, but with some tips that you can easily find online, you can organize an evening Trivial Pursuit all female. And I’m not just talking about the players, but also about the categories on which to challenge: women in politics, women in music, women in sport and so on. A nice refresh of some biographies can help us remember not to limit ourselves and to pursue our goals.

7- SHOPPING SESSION BUT ONLY OF BRANDS MANAGED BY WOMEN

I couldn’t forget the shoppers. Buying clothes, shoes and bags can be a very ethical action: for 8 March we buy branded garments created and managed by women. There are many online and most of them are eco-sustainable and inclusive. Better than this!

8- READ A BIOGRAPHY

If you’re undecided about what to read right now, it’s the right day to start reading the biography of a woman you admire. There are so many and there is plenty of choice: da Becoming of Michelle Obama a The Truths we hold of Kamala Harris, passing through Greta Thunberg, Billie Holiday e Alda Merini.

9- CREATE A MUSICAL PLAYLIST

We mentioned movies and books, could music ever be missing? Create an all-female playlist and share it with your friends: each one will enrich it with their own choices and will become a precious reminder to listen to whenever you feel lonely, sad or dejected. Female solidarity also serves this purpose.

10- TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Remember: the most important woman in your life is you, so take advantage of this day to dedicate some time to yourself and to what makes you happy. At the end of the day, write down a list of the things you have been able to accomplish in the past few months and to be thankful for – it will give you some strength for the future.

And you? Which one will you start from?
