THE war in Ukraine has been going on for a month now and the list of the dead is growing. 10-year-old gymnast Kateryna Dyachenko lost her life when her house was bombed by Russian fire in Mariupol.
Her coach confirmed her death on Instragram, reports the Sun. With a photo of them from last December, he described the 10-year-old and one of her favorite athletes as “beautiful”.
Condolences have been sent by many sports federations around the world. “I do not believe it, the colleague from Ukraine shared this tragedy. This beautiful creature is already an angel. “I do not believe we live in such a harsh world,” wrote gymnast Iliana Raeva from Bulgaria.
In Mariupol, the “city of the dead” as it is called, thousands of residents are trapped inside buildings, without food, water, electricity and heating. The Human Rights Watch has described the situation in the city as “a frozen landscape of hell with corpses and destroyed buildings”.
