1000% profit: rotten meat was bought for less than one real

The Rio de Janeiro company suspected of making meat unsuitable for consumption bought food spoiled by less than a real according to Civil Police investigations.

The meat that was submerged for days in the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul in May last year was purchased by around R$0.97 per kilo according to Wellington Pereira Vieira, delegate from the Consumer Police Station (Decon) of Rio de Janeiro, in an interview with CNN .

The profit was more than 1000%, according to the investigation. The invoices seized by the police showed that the good meat was valued at R$5 million reais. However, the group purchased 800 tons of products for around R$80,000 and sold the meat to other companies.

More than 30 trucks left Rio Grande do Sul for various destinations in Brazil. One of the purchasing companies was identified by the police is Frigodias, in Contagem (MG), which purchased 15 tons of spoiled food.

The investigation also points out that the company’s profits came from selling spoiled prime meat to markets in the region. Rotten pieces of 900-gram picanha in markets in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

The police are investigating a new aspect of the scheme that involves insurance companies. Evidence indicates that insurance companies activated meatpacking plants in cases of road accidents with meat as cargo .

The insurance companies, responsible for cleaning the roads with the cargo, had the advantage of having the cleaning carried out by third parties, who still purchased the food that was already unfit for consumption at prices well below the market.

Civil police officers from Decon carried out eight search and seizure warrants at addresses linked to those investigated in Três Rios, a municipality in the Central-South region of Rio de Janeiro.

The operation took place in conjunction with the Consumer Police of Rio Grande do Sul, which had been investigating the situation since May last year.

Partners of the establishment acquired 800 tons of spoiled beef (prime cuts) which was submerged in the floods that hit Porto Alegre (RS).

“That deterioration caused by the mud and water, which accumulated in the refrigerator and throughout the city of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, left some deleterious effects. These effects were removed, as I said, with makeup, for resale”, stated the delegate Wellington Pereira Vieira.

The company claimed that the intention of the purchase was to manufacture animal feed.
