$ 10,000 a day in fines for Donald Trump for failing to comply with a court order

Former United States President Donald Trump has been sentenced by a New York court to pay $ 10,000 a day for refusing to provide accounting and tax documents to authorities as part of an investigation into his company.

“This is a great victory, a court ruled in our favor and convicted Donald Trump of obstructing justice,” New York Attorney General Leticia James wrote on Twitter.

“Donald Trump will have to pay $ 10,000 a day for each day he continues to defy the court order to deliver the documents to my office,” added the attorney general, who has been investigating possible tax fraud for years. part of Trump’s company, the Trump Organization.

On February 17, another New York judge, at James’ request, ordered the Republican tycoon and two of his children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, to testify under oath in the investigation. Trump appealed, but the court also requested that the prosecution be given various documents before March 31. As there was no response from the Trump family, Leticia James appealed to the Supreme Court of the State of New York, seeking to convict Trump for refusing to comply with the court order.

The New York Attorney General believes that the company fraudulently overestimated the value of the property it owned when requesting bank loans and reduced this value when declaring it to the tax authorities, in order to pay lower taxes.

If Trump does not pay the fine, he could be jailed under New York State law that allows judges to order the imprisonment of those who do not comply with court rulings, as Sarah Chrysoff of Day Pitney law firm explained. She clarified, however, that such a scenario is not very likely and that the judge will probably choose another sentence.
