102 thousand euros for children with leukemia: the “will in the drawer” of an 85-year-old lady

Some described her as having a difficult character, yet before her passing she thought with great selflessness and generosity of children with leukemia. Yes, because a year after her death, the Vicenza lawyer Riccardo Brotto found in the living room of a lady from Bassano del Grappa a will establishing a donation of 102 thousand euros intended for the pediatric oncohematology department of Padua.

A story that tastes like a fairy tale and that features an elderly lady who died in December 2021 at the age of 85 without children or husband, who had left her years earlier due to illness. It was precisely the lawyer Brotto, the woman’s support administrator, who told it.

“While I was rearranging the lady’s personal effects, I noticed the testamentary disposition,” explained al Courier of the Veneto. «My client was alone: her husband had died some time ago and she had no children as she had married late in life».

The lady is described as a person with a complex character, a characteristic that would have made relations with her distant relatives fragile and also complicated relations with Brotto’s predecessors who «had given up their office due to problems from the point of view temperamental. But with me, for some reason, she had established a relationship of trust ».

The last years of the lady’s life were not easy: alone she first had to face a fall which forced her to spend a long time in hospital, then a stay in a nursing home, a period in which the guardianship judge deemed it appropriate to assign her a support administrator, also to manage the expenses necessary to stay in the facility; «When I went to visit her in the nursing home she always asked me how my children were doing» says Brotto.

The legacy and the projects it will be used for

On the subject of inheritance, there are often formalities and protocols that make everything rather complex, as we have explained to you in this article. But fortunately this is not the case: the Padua health company has become universal heir, as per the lady’s will, and will receive the entire sum, which is what remains of a life of constant work as a worker.

The substantial sum will thus be able to help the young guests of the pediatric oncohematology department of the Padua hospital, part of the Women’s and Children’s Health Department headed by Professor Alessandra Biffi, allowing them to improve the conditions in which they have to face delicate periods of their lives.
