The 10th Biennale has a special anniversary character, as it is presented 26 years after the 1st Biennale that took place in 1995, in parallel with the founding of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. The establishment of the Biennale institution a quarter of a century ago, was a primary initiative of EIA, with the aim of encouraging young architects and promoting their work through exhibitions, workshops and publications. During those 26 years, the Biennale was attended by hundreds of architects, many of whom later distinguished themselves as professional and university teachers.
The 82 entries submitted for the 10th Biennale, come from all parts of Greece, while the percentage of studies outside Greece is impressive, mainly from Cyprus, but also from New York, Copenhagen, Strasbourg, Mozambique and Vietnam. .
In the midst of the pandemic, they highlight a particular aspect of recent architectural production. The predominant theme of the projects is the reflection in relation to the always topical issue of housing, with the issues of urban regeneration and public character being clearly less, although particularly remarkable. In these participations, “youthful” synthetic proposals emerge, with original ideas, but also maturity, both in relation to the organization of the space and its elaboration, the integration in the place and the scale (without, however, bearing the stress of “tradition”) , as well as in relation to the effort to implement them.
They are approaches that remind us that there are young architects who can move beyond stereotypes and current fashions. They try to exist through their work, highlighting in parallel with the individual creation, the universal values and the social dimension of the architecture, which look forward to the really “new” through the historical continuity and its overthrow. In contrast, part of the exhibition is dedicated to the office of Doxiadis, who developed at all scales of the space the modern approach of the historic site.
Will this generation manage to leave its own architectural mark in space and time? Perhaps this year’s exhibition at the transforming modern “monument” of One Athens has its symbolic significance.
