There are films that we will remember for a lifetime, either for their photography, costumes, settings or for the excellent or terrible performance of their actors. Focusing on this last point, we share with you 13 celebrities who have been approved or destroyed by critics after their work on screen.
You may not agree with everyone, since genres are broken in tastes. However, you can take this list as a reference to set up a marathon and give your own opinion about it.
1. Daniel Kaluuya como Chris Washington
Film: Huye!
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
Kaluuya’s performance was brilliant. He perfectly projected the terror he experienced when he arrived at his in-laws’ house, until the momentary helplessness when the police arrived at the final scene.
2. Ben Affleck como Bruce Wayne (Batman)
Film: Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
Choice: Bankruptcy
Critic’s Comments:
I will never understand why everyone thinks that his portrayal of Bruce Wayne was excellent, he was too talkative, he did not convey emotions and he did not add anything new.
3. Rosamund Pike como Amy Dunne
Film: Lost
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
Rosamund perfectly embodied the Amy that appears in the film’s eponymous book and somehow gave the character more depth. In my opinion, it was excellent and deserved the Oscar.
4. Topher Grace como Eddie Brock (Venom)
Film: Spider-Man 3
Choice: Bankruptcy
Critic’s Comments:
He shouldn’t have been in that movie. Or at least, not his character, enough with Sandman and Harry Osborne as villains. In fact, because of this, his character as Venom was not well developed.
5. Awkwafina as Billy Wang
Film: The Farewell
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
He gave us incredible monologues with so much depth and cried at the right times. No wonder she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress! However, he deserved an Oscar for this work.
6. Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson/Red
Film: U.S
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
She played two different characters so easily that you had to remind yourself that they weren’t two actresses. His work was so brilliant that he portrayed each character’s calm and vindictive smiles to perfection, sparking fear and anxiety.
7. Angelina Jolie como Lisa Rowe
Film: Innocence interrupted
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
Only Angelina could play such a passionate, intelligent and seductive role at the same time. She is a goddess of acting in the right role.
8. Jared Leto as the Joker
Film: Suicide Squad
Choice: Bankruptcy
Critic’s Comments:
Much of his performance felt improvised. Even if he had put his new look aside, it would still seem over the top and lousy to me. It did not bring anything new to the character and ended up disappointing fans.
9. Ana de Armas as Marta Cabrera
Film: Knives Out
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
She perfectly captured emotions just using facial expressions and I was impressed with how she could make it go from supporting her to questioning her motives and then supporting her again. His handling of emotions is another level.
10. Anne Hathaway as Mirana, the White Queen
Film: Alice in Wonderland
Choice: Bankruptcy
Critic’s Comments:
Anne Hathaway’s White Queen always looked incredibly out of place, her facial expressions too exaggerated and her movements the same. I could never stop thinking about how weird she looked in that role.
11. Harrison Ford como Indiana Jones
Film: Indiana Jones
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
I know they considered Tom Selleck for the role, but they made the right choice with Harrison Ford – I can’t imagine anyone else in this role.
12. Keanu Reeves as Neo
Film: Matrix
Choice: Perfect!
Critic’s Comments:
I can’t imagine what Neo would have been like if Will Smith hadn’t turned down the role. The cinema appreciates that Reeves has kept the role and continues to bring the character to life.
13. Cara Delevingne as Laureline and Dane DeHaan as Valerian
Film: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Choice: Doubly failed
Critic’s Comments:
The cast was the only thing that really disappointed in this movie – it pretty much had it all, but there was no chemistry between Cara and Dane. Their performances were so forced and their love so false that not for a single second did I believe in them. Too bad, with another cast it would have been a box office success.
