14 prison guards in Italy are accused of torturing and beating a prisoner

Over ten prison guards in a penitentiary in Reggio Emilia, a city in the north Italyface charges of torture and beating prisoner of Tunisian origin at the beginning of April, the Italian judiciary announced yesterday Thursday.

The prison guards have been suspended after being accused of torture, beating and causing bodily harm to a prisoner, and making false statements to cover up the factsthe local prosecutor’s office announced in a statement.

The investigation, which is being carried out against 14 suspects, began after a complaint was filed by a prisoner of Tunisian origin. The events unfolded on April 3rd.

The prisoner forced to lie on the ground, head covered with a pillowcase, before being “kicked and punched in the face and body”prosecutor Gaetano Calogero Paci said to the media.

While being held in solitary confinement, the inmate broke a sink and used a piece of it to cut himself, requiring medical attention, according to Italian media.

Footage captured by CCTV cameras led to the identification of the suspects, according to reports.
