14 Tenerife airport workers arrested – Accused of stealing luxury items from luggage

Fourteen employees of an airport on the island of Tenerife have been arrestedas they are burdened with suspicions that items worth almost 2 million euros were stolen from passengers’ luggage, as the Spanish militia announced today. Among the stolen items taken from passengers of various nationalities at the airport located in the southern part of the Canary Island were 29 luxury watches, 22 state-of-the-art smartphones and 120 pieces of jewelrythe press release states.

The Spanish militia suspects that the 14 arrested have already sold in stores and other stolen items. Another 20 workers at the airport and 27 jewelry stores on the island are also under the microscope of the authorities, as reported by APE-MPE. The thefts took place while the suitcases were being placed in the baggage area of ​​the aircraft. According to the investigators, the suspects removed the valuables while the passengers and other employees did not see them. They then hid the stolen items in pockets sewn inside their clothes or in their lockers at the airport, Spanish police said. Tenerife Airport welcomed 10.8 million passengers in 2022, the seventh-busiest Spanish airport in a row, according to managing company Aena.
