15 Easter eggs in cult films that even fans miss

It’s quite common for directors to use so-called easter eggs in their films to please audiences of fans with some kind of veiled message or reference to something in pop culture. Most often, such hints are quite easy to notice and recognize even for a person far from the sphere of entertainment, but sometimes the authors of films make Easter eggs so subtle that even after watching their favorite movie twenty times, a fan may not notice the hidden signs and hints. It is about them that I would like to talk – about Easter eggs, which the viewer, most likely, has seen many times, but could not recognize.

💡 Attention: There are spoilers in the description of some references.

Thor – inconspicuous cameo

Literally any Marvel film is full of all sorts of references, and the fleeting roles of Stan Lee (the author of Marvel Comics comics) have long ceased to surprise anyone, turning into a hallmark of a fantasy franchise. But in “Thor” you can see another cameo – in the scene where the men are trying to pull the hammer out of the crater, Michael Straczynski himself starred. He is the author of comics about Thor, as well as the screenwriter of the film about the Norse god.

Angry Birds Movie – Kubrick Style Outfit

The mobile game Angry Birds captivated the audience so much that once the owners of the franchise even came up with the idea to make a movie with birds and green pigs. And in one of the scenes, these same pigs appeared in identical blue dresses, which probably seemed to the children’s audience just a ridiculous element of the story. In fact, this is a direct reference to the cult horror film The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick based on the book by Stephen King.

Despicable Me Concert Ticket with a Trick

It is rather strange, of course, to make Easter eggs in a children’s animated film, but the directors decided that it was appropriate. Due to this, in the Despicable Me scene, you can see a ticket for a concert intended for girls, the code of which (072069C in the lower left corner of the ticket) is a reference to the date of the landing of a man on the moon – July 20, 1969. The ticket, which is noteworthy, is shown in the scene at the moment of the abduction of the moon itself.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – fear of a name

In the fictional world described in the Harry Potter saga, wizards and sorceresses were so afraid of the villain Voldemort that they did not even say his name aloud – instead, the heroes (in addition to Dumbledore and Harry himself) called the dark magician “He-whom- can’t-name.” The authors of the film also decided not to play with fire – in the credits for the film “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” opposite the actor Richard Bremmer (played the personality of Voldemort), the real name of the worst of the wizards was also not indicated.

Men in black – actress through the years

The famous American director Barry Sonnenfeld once created an amazing franchise “Men in Black”. And he not only managed to write himself a cameo in each of the films of the trilogy, but also involved his daughter – Chloe Sonnenfeld first appeared as a baby in the original 1997 film, then in 2002 she played a cameo role of a little girl at the post office in the second part, and in the final film, released in 2012, she got the role of a hippie.

The First Avenger: Another War – the inscription that no one noticed

The very case when an Easter egg can be seen only with a magnifying glass, watching a movie frame by frame. The thing is that the inscription engraved on the tombstone of Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) is a reference to the verse “The path of the righteous …”, which the actor’s character read in the movie Pulp Fiction.

Batman v Superman – tricky lead charges

In a battle that seemed like Batman was simply not destined to win, one of the richest people in fictional worlds decided to use a rather interesting trick – he built charges for a grenade launcher from lead (the Pb engraving flashes in the frame – short for plumbum), stuffing them with a substance capable of inflicting Superman noticeable damage. The trick is that lead is the only metal Superman can’t see through with his x-ray eyes, so the charges came in handy.

John Wick 2 – gunshots instead of musical instruments

The creators of the peppy action movie “John Wick” in the second part of the series decided to rework the classic work of Vivaldi called Four Seasons in a very non-standard way – in the battle scene, the role of musical instruments was transferred to pistol shots. It turned out spectacularly and brightly, although the audience without exquisite taste in music, most likely, did not notice this.

Sonic in the cinema – street in honor of the console

In the film dedicated to the cult video game hero, they decided to make a small but pleasant reference – one of the streets along which Sonic runs at the beginning of the film is called Mega Drive. This easter egg is dedicated to the SEGA console, which at one time featured early games in the Sonic franchise.

The Matrix is a hidden symbol

The scene of the training fight between Neo and Morpheus in the original film “The Matrix” deserves special praise, but in addition to spectacular movements, the directors managed to fit into it also a hidden meaning. If you pay attention to the frame in which the fight is shown from above, you can see that the heroes in the process of delivering the same blow form a yin-yang symbol.

Interstellar – the real astronaut experience

Of course, this film is replete with interesting details that can be parsed for hours. But the scene in which the main characters go through the process of docking with a spaceship deserves special attention. Cooper, an experienced pilot, tilts his head in the opposite direction of the ship’s rotation, while Brenda, who has no such flying experience, keeps his head in the direction of rotation. As a result, Cooper remains conscious, while Brenda loses consciousness due to an incorrect maneuver.

Monsters, Inc. – a cartoon that doesn’t exist yet

When watching Monsters, Inc., many viewers missed one very important detail at the time of release – the speech about the toy in the form of Nemo fish, which Boo is trying to give Sally. They missed this Easter egg for another cult cartoon only because Finding Nemo came out only two years after Monsters, Inc. – a reference from the future.

Avatar is a rare mineral with a funny name

The stumbling block, so to speak, in the movie “Avatar” was a rather rare mineral called unobtanium, which people found on Pandora. True, James Cameron himself did not invent the word “unobtanium” – this is quite a real term that has been used since the 50s of the last century to generically designate extremely rare materials in experimental or theoretical projects. For example, the creators of the Lockheed SR-71 strategic reconnaissance aircraft at one time called titanium rare in the United States with this term.

Get Ready Player One – Maze in the name

Actually, this film consists entirely of easter eggs – references to video games, films and pop culture in general appear in almost every frame. There was even a place for Monty Python, songs of the 80s, rather old cartoons and heroes of forgotten films. But the first Easter egg awaits the viewer already on the movie poster – the original title of the film in English (Ready Player One) is a full-fledged labyrinth that many have not noticed.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – that Jedi

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are longtime friends and ardent admirers of each other’s work, so of course, there is nothing surprising in the multitude of mutual references. For example, in Spielberg’s film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, attentive viewers noticed a club called Obi Wan – that was the name of the Jedi Master from the Star Wars saga, which was created by Lucas.
