15% of Ethereum validators have advocated an increase in gas limit

More than 150,000 Ethereum validators, and this is about 15% of the total number of validators on the network, supported an increase in the gas limit from the current indicator of 36 million to 60 million units.

In Ethereum, gas serves as the main unit of measurement of computational efforts necessary for transactions or smart contracts. The gas limit is the maximum amount of gas that all transactions can consume within the same block.

An increase in the maximum indicator will allow each unit to process more data, and the network will be able to process a larger volume of transactions. Unlike the main updates of the protocol, this change does not require a hard fork. Validators can change the configurations of their nodes when offering blocks. As soon as more than 50% of the validators confirm support, the gas limit in the block will change automatically.

Earlier, the gas limit amounted to 30 million, but in February of this year it increased to 36 million. The previous adjustment was carried out in 2021, when this indicator was doubled from 15 to 30 million units.

Despite the fact that an increased gas limit can increase transaction capacity, some developers warn that this can create a load on the equipment of NOD operators and potentially affect the network operation.
