The PlayStation 3, which will celebrate 15 years of launch this year, has unexpectedly received the 4.88 software update, surprising a huge number of users.
The previous update was released last December, it improved the stability of the operating system, as well as updated Blu-ray keys for new games and improved device security.
The latest update released on Tuesday informs PS3 owners that at least 200MB of free space is required to install the firmware. The changelog mentions unspecified additional features as well as improved usability and security.
Sony’s continued support for the console has delighted many fans, especially after fears that the manufacturer will soon drop support for the console. We will remind, earlier it was reported that Sony will close the online store for PSP, PS3 and PS Vita in 2021. Then Sony changed policy: the PSP store will be closed on July 2, but the PS3 and PS Vita stores will continue to operate.
Sony Interactive President Jim Ryan recently detailed how important the PS4 is to Sony’s continued success. It seems that the company is not yet ready to give up on the PlayStation 3 either.
