16 -year -old is suspected of the death of a Brazilian student in Bolivia

Brazilian Jenife Socorro de Almeida da Silva, a 37-year-old medical student, was found dead last Wednesday (2) in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Bolivian authorities investigate the case as femicide, having a 16 year old as the main suspect .

Death, according to the authorities, was caused by asphyxiation, information confirmed by the subsection of Santana of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-AP), which issued a note of regret and demanded rigorous investigation.

The 16 -year -old introduced himself to the police and is detained preventively at the Cenvicruz imprisonment Center. However, Jenife’s family and his lawyer, Cicero Bordalo Jr., question this version.

“The minor arrived at the police, identified himself as an author and is seized, but we know that he is not the author of the fact, because his statement was totally disconnected with what the police found in the victim’s apartment,” said Bordalo Jr.

The lawyer also criticizes the Bolivian police for not examining DNA in a condom at the crime scene, raising doubts about the authorship of the adolescent, whose testimony is inconsistent. He suspects the involvement of an ex-boyfriend and a possible “intellectual author” manipulating the case.

The lawyer seeks to prevent the cremation of the body to preserve evidence and requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) expertise of cadaverous exhumation in Brazil. Bordalo Jr. reported that a request against cremation and repatriation will be filed with Itamaraty.

MRE said it was in contact with the family, providing consular assistance, but clarified that the transfer of remains is not funded by public resources.

Jenife, divorced and mother of two, was in Bolivia to finish her medical background after returning to the country just over two months. Family and colleagues started a fundraising campaign to assist the family.

A peaceful act in memory of Jenife took place last Tuesday (8) in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and with another demonstration in Santana (AP), in Brazil.
