The Military Police (PM) of Minas Gerais seized, on the night of Wednesday (22), a 16-year-old teenager who confessed to having caused the fire at the Institute of Education of Minas Gerais (IEMG), in the Trabalhadores neighborhood, in the capital of Minas Gerais. .

According to the PM, the teenager would have confessed to his mother that he was responsible for the fire and she advised him to confess to the police.

Police officers went to the apartment where the two were and, after the teenager took responsibility for the crime, he was apprehended.

To the police, the teenager reported that he and a 13-year-old colleague went to smoke a cigarette in a room, which is used to store tables and chairs at the school.

Still according to him, these tables and chairs were wrapped in plastic and, shortly after he finished his cigarette, he threw the tip over this plastic, which was perforated.

The cigarette butt then landed where the tables and chairs were stored. Before leaving the scene, the teenager would have passed the lighter on the plastic covering the furniture.

Minutes later, he went to his classroom and, arriving there, he found that there was a fire inside the room where they were previously. The young man also noticed that there were people asking for help.

That’s when the PM and the Fire Department were triggered. The building was evacuated and firefighters managed to control the fire. There were no serious injuries, but 36 people had to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

According to the corporation, the IEMG’s Fire Department Inspection Report (AVCB) is in the process of being regularized.

In this way, the building has an approved project and the adjustments were still being made, which does not prevent the operation of the place.

The Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte carried out a risk inspection in two rooms and an access corridor in the premises of the Institute of Education, which were damaged by fire.

Superficial damage and detachment of plaster from slabs and walls were observed. At the time of the inspection, no risks to the structures were detected.

The Secretary of State for Education has suspended classes until the site is completely safe for the return of students and staff.

This Wednesday (23), the government of Minas Gerais announced the start of restoration work on the historic building, which should involve investments of more than R$ 30 million.

The IEMG building is one of the most traditional public schools in Belo Horizonte and the largest school in the state network of Minas Gerais.

The building is from 1897 and listed by the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (Iepha-MG) for its historical and architectural importance.
