A Palestinian teenager who was wounded on Saturday by fire from Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank succumbed today, the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry announced.
Kamel Alaunach, 17, succumbed to his wounds “to the abdomen and hand”. Israeli soldiers shot him in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, according to the source.
The Israeli military claimed in a statement that “a suspect fired a firebomb at Israeli soldiers” in the village of Jamba, near Jenin. “Soldiers fired live bullets at the suspect and wounded him,” he added, without elaborating.
In recent weeks the army has increased its operations in Jenin, where the refugee camp is a stronghold of armed Palestinian organizations. From this camp came the perpetrators of several recent attacks in Israel, in which 19 people have been killed. Since the end of March, Israeli security forces have been conducting almost daily operations in the West Bank. At least 49 Palestinians and three Arab Israelis have been killed in these operations – some were members of armed groups, but the victims included civilians, such as Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was covering an army operation in Jenin.
