A 17-year-old teenager was rescued by Portuguese authorities after being missing at sea for more than 20 hours.
The Portuguese Air Force – arm of the country’s Armed Forces – published a video on YouTube showing the rescue of the young woman by helicopter after being pulled out of the water by crew members of a merchant ship. Watch the video below.
The girl was reported missing last Saturday (15). On the afternoon of this Sunday (16), about 20 hours later, a ship circulating near the coast of the Algarve, in the extreme south of Portugal, located the girl on the high seas and rescued her.
The ship’s crew called the authorities, who sent a helicopter to the spot. It was found 37 kilometers from the coast, in a region with one meter high waves and 19 km/h winds.
“Since he was suffering from hypothermia, he was provided with a thermal and heating blanket while still on the vessel, in order to avoid the cold of the climb to the helicopter”, said the Portuguese Air Force in a note.
According to investigations, the girl was dragged away from the coast while practicing stand up paddle – a sport that consists of standing on a board and paddling.
“This was the second young woman to be rescued by the Air Force over the weekend. It should be recalled that on Saturday a helicopter rescued a 16-year-old girl who disappeared during a kayaking competition in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores”, concluded the statement from the Air Force.
