18-month-old girl pulled alive from rubble in Syria – pregnant mother and two siblings killed

An 18-month-old baby girl was pulled alive from the rubble of a house in the northwestern city of Azaz earlier today Syriabut several members of his family were killed because of him strong earthquake of 7.8 degrees which also wreaked havoc on neighboring Turkey.

Minutes after a rescuer pulled the toddler away from the rubble, holding her lovingly in his arms, the girl’s uncle told a Reuters reporter that two of Ragdad Ismail’s brothers and her mother, who was pregnant, had been killed.

Sitting on cushions near a wood stove, wrapped in a blanket, the little girl tried to eat a piece of bread as Abu Hussam recounted the family’s drama to Reuters. “The father probably suffered a fractured spine, his little daughter is fine. His pregnant wife, five-year-old daughter and four-year-old son were killed,” said the uncle of little Ragdad.

According to him, a mother and her three children were also rescued from the ruins of the same building.

The Ismail family was forced to leave their home in the town of Morek due to the decade-long civil war in Syria. He had found refuge in Azaz, a city near the border with Turkey, which is under the control of anti-regime forces.

The powerful earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria in the past hours have killed at least 2,600 people, according to the latest count. In particular, in Syria the dead amount to about a thousand, while in Turkey the Ministry of Health speaks of at least 1,651 victims.
