The arrival of summer is synonymous with sun-kissed skin, as well as holidays and evenings outdoors. And like any self-respecting summer, one of the goals at the end of the season is to win a beautiful one tanning. Too often, however, we still forget that exposure to the sun – certainly beneficial in many physical and mental aspects – must be done in a reasoned way, without underestimating the risks that the rays can have on the skin.
The Prof. Leonardo Celleno, dermatologist and president of AIDECO (Italian Association of Dermatology and Cosmetology), warns us and gives us some practical advice, especially for the first exposures.
«The effects of the sun on the skin depend on us and our behavior. The first sunscreen is “common sense”. It is now known that it is important to observe correct behavior when exposing oneself, and this not only when undergoing real “sun baths”, as in summer, but throughout the year. The skin, in fact, especially that of face, hands and décolleté it is exposed every day, even in the city, to solar radiation, and therefore must be protected daily, through the use of cosmetic products with an adequate SPF factor, therefore containing UV filters and screens ”, recommends Prof. Celleno.
The most delicate areas to pay attention to? Certainly the eye contour, hands and décolleté. «Greater precautions must be taken all the more when exposure to the sun is prolonged and occurs in certain conditions, such as in summer, at the sea, or even in the mountains. These are all rules that should now be part of normal behavior, such as avoiding exposure in the hottest hours of the day and always using sunscreen products that must be applied several times and in the right way. This is to avoid even redness and repeated burns over time that can lead to possible serious effects on the skin in the long term ”, explains the AIDECO president.
When we talk about sun exposure, then, we immediately think of the protective cream, but also after sun plays an important role and is a basic product, also to keep the tan longer. «It is in fact essential after a day of exposure to atmospheric agents, and in particular for “wild” solar exposures, to restore hydration and skin physiology as much as possible, however compromised. A very delicate cleansing followed by the application of a moisturizing, soothing, decongestant and refreshing fluid, will allow to relieve the stress suffered by the skin and to obtain a safe and uniform tan », concludes prof. Leonardo Celleno.
By following these simple, but fundamental, rules you will find yourself not only without skin problems such as blemishes, erythema, sunburn, melasms, but it will come in late summer with a healthy, even complexion that will last longer. And skin aging – which is inevitably stimulated by the sun – will also be kept under control.
There are also strategies to be implemented yet before exposing yourself to the sun and which can further facilitate a safe tan. For example, you can use specific supplements (to be taken at least a month before exposure) and you can prepare the skin so that it is at the top to receive all the benefits of the sun’s rays. How? With SPA treatments designed to exfoliate it, nourish it deeply, make it homogeneous and provide it with an additional natural barrier to face the challenges of summer.
