18 states report a drop in the Covid-19 fatality rate

Second survey carried out by CNN, 18 states recorded a drop in the Covid-19 fatality rate in the first half of November. The data were analyzed comparing the rates registered between June and July, calculated based on new cases and new deaths registered during each month.

The fatality rate represents the cases that progressed to death among people who contracted Covid-19. Based on the epidemiological bulletins released by the Ministry of Health, the CNN analyzed and calculated the lethality rate registered by each unit of the federation during October and November, with the period division every 15 days.

According to the analysis, the states that registered the fall from October to November were: Acre, Alagoas, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, Sergipe and Tocantins.

Of these states, 16 registered an index lower than that calculated in the second half of October. Maranhão and Pernambuco, which registered a fall in the first 15 days of November compared to the same period in the previous month, registered, however, growth in November when the data is compared with the last half of October.

The state with the biggest drop in the fatality rate was Roraima. In the first half of October, the index was 17.78%, calculated based on 90 cases and 16 deaths due to the disease. In November, there was a drop of 15.97 percentage points; of the 497 cases, only 9 deaths were from Covid-19 complications.

Another highlight is that Acre, Amapá, Paraíba and Rondônia registered the rate below 1%. Acre did not record any deaths from November 1st until November 15th, therefore, it recorded 0% lethality.

The drop in mortality rates and in the absolute numbers of Covid-19 can be explained by the advance of vaccination against the disease, which has already immunized priority groups and now affects larger parts of the general population. The period analyzed was also about two weeks after the start of the application of the third dose in the national immunization campaign against Covid-19.
