18 wild elephants killed in India – Their deaths may have been caused by lightning

The local community in the eastern Indian state of Assam, where 18 wild Asian elephants have been found dead, is shocked. Officials said the animals may have been struck by lightning.

On Thursday (13/5) villagers found 14 adults dead elephants and four others were found dead at the foot of the Kundoli protected forest area in Assam, 160 kilometers from the state capital, Dispour, local wildlife service official MK Yadava told Reuters.

The local government, as reported by the Athens News Agency, citing local media, today ordered an investigation into the incident, as announced by Assam’s Minister of Forests and Wildlife, Parimal Suklabaidiya.

«A preliminary report suggests that (animal) deaths may have been caused by lightning although we have to find out through the examinations that will be carried out and will show if there are any other causes such as poisoning or disease “, the minister added.

Locals who found the animals’ bodies said the elephants may have been struck by lightning late Wednesday night., according to a forester, who added that he saw burnt trees in the area.
