An 18-year-old young man, identified as Alex Silton de Oliveira, was shot dead last Tuesday (15) during an action by the Bahia Military Police. The incident took place in the IAPI neighborhood, in Salvador (BA), and the Civil Police are investigating the case.
According to the PM, the young man was killed after a confrontation between armed men and police teams. However, family members and residents of the region dispute the version, claiming that the young man was the victim of police action.
In a note sent to CNN the Military Police of Bahia detailed the action. “According to information from the incident, the police were carrying out actions to intensify policing in the locality, when they came across armed men who, upon police approach, fired shots at the soldiers. There was a fightback. After the exchange of gunfire, a suspect was found injured and was taken to a health unit in the region, where he succumbed to his injuries,” says the note.
According to the PM, a 32 caliber revolver, ammunition, as well as portions of crack and cocaine were seized from Alex, which were sent to the Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station (DHPP) for registration. The Civil Police confirmed that the case is under investigation.
However, community residents dispute the information provided by the Military Police. According to Alex Silton’s family, the young man was on the street where he lived, early Tuesday night, when police officers shot him, and he was shot in the head. According to relatives, Alex was not involved in crimes.
The boy’s death sparked protests on Tuesday night on Avenida San Martin. The following afternoon, on Wednesday (16), a new act of protest was carried out, leading the police to disperse the protesters.
