Jana Heidersdorf is the horror artist and illustrator who is causing nightmares among fans of mermaids by showing them from a perspective totally removed from that of fairy tales.
The artist shares her work on Instagram with her more than 27,000 followers, who each week await her new creation. All illustrations are unique and inspired by mythological tales, personal experiences and emotions.
Jana began this illustrative project with the intention of reaching 100 drawings to later create a book that mixes art, fantasy and horror in a unique way. Here we share some of his work.
1. Serra Agnatha
This mermaid has developed slime-producing glands that make her unpleasant to predators, while her mouthful of teeth is useful for dismantling and eating her prey.
2. Sierra Medusa
Don’t be fooled by its delicate appearance. A touch of its tentacles can cause severe inflammation to death.
3. My Zero Siren
This was the first drawing I made of mermaids.
4. Sedna Void
He stalks the North Pacific and the Arctic Ocean, collecting and stealing the souls of every creature he encounters.
5. The Holy Sirena
Its ethereal and fleeting form has led to the formation of the Iglesia de la Sirena, a cult that worships her as the incarnation of an angel.
6. Serra Monoceras
Inspired by narwhals. This creature has been roaming the depths of the Arctic Ocean for centuries, unnoticed or disturbed.
7. Serra Commons
To survive, this mermaid joined forces with a hitherto unidentified species of fish.
8. Sierra Teuthida
This mermaid will use a dense ink mist to ward off the curious. Also, he uses this weapon to poison his prey.
9. Serra Hortus
Half plant, half mammal. This mermaid is an ecosystem unto itself.
10. Gorgona Gorgona
This mermaid seems to have arisen directly from Greek mythology. It shares its prey with the snakes attached to its head.
11. Siren Quiet
It has a skeletal and weathered appearance. It is cold-blooded, with a slow metabolism and barely detectable heartbeats that fool its prey.
12. Serra Chlorophyta
This mermaid’s hair produces a lot of oxygen in the water. In turn, this oxygen serves as a filter for small marine organisms.
13. Serra Ramosa
Its branches form a vital part of your life support system, supplying you with oxygen and nutrients.
14. Sawmill
Their shells serve as solid protection against natural predators, but are ineffective against human greed.
15. Sirena de Fiji
Important note: In 1860, the mummified body of a Barnum mermaid, long believed to be nothing more than a hoax, may actually have been real.
16. Serra Servata
This creature has a bag that serves as a storage for small marine animals.
17. Serra Sphyrna
This mermaid is a skilled hunter and surprisingly agile swimmer. It usually avoids humans and is a deadly danger to stingrays.
18. Serra Vela
Its dorsal fins allow it to catch the wind in a similar way to a sail, to travel both underwater and drifting on the surface.
19. Gorgona Eucrante
It is not yet determined if their braids are a product of nature or a habit they have acquired to camouflage themselves.
