Natanael Venâncio Almeida, 19, Died during a Military Police action On the night of last Saturday (17), in Vila Andrade, south of São Paulo. The event triggered a protest of residents that resulted in the burning of a car on Carlos Caldeira Filho Avenue on Monday (19).
According to the Military Police, on Saturday (17), a team from ROCAM (ostensible rounds with motorcycles support) visualized two individuals on a motorcycle with the ribbon covered plate during patrolling on Campo Novo do Sul Street, in Vila Andrade.
The pair reportedly fled and, after a brief persecution, entered the Travessa Campo Novo do Sul, where he tried to escape on foot.
According to the PM, during the attempt to approach, one of the police would have seen one of the individuals with a gun in hand. The agent fired three shots, which hit the young man, and was eventually hit by his own weapon.
The injured policeman was rescued and sent to Albert Einstein Hospital. Natanael, who according to the PM was on the motorcycle, was treated on the spot by a fire department and taken to the Campo Limpo hospital, but could not resist the injuries and died in the hospital.
In response to Natanael’s death, the young family and friends of the young man made a protest. The family claims that the young man is innocent.
According to the PM, the protest began at 4:40 pm and ended around 3:22 am on Tuesday (20). SPTrans reported that the bus lines operated with deviations in the region, with technical teams following the situation.
For the sake of the wake and burial expenses, the victim’s relatives are asking for donations to be able to bear the expenses.
Investigations in progress
The São Paulo Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) reported that “all circumstances of the facts are investigated by the Department of Homicide and Protection of Persons (DHPP) and the Military Police through Military Police Inquiry (IPM)”.
The SSP pointed out that the military police involved in the action used portable operational cameras, and that the images will be analyzed during the investigations. The weapons involved in the action were seized and sent to expertise.
Expert reports were requested from the Institute of Criminalistics and the Forensic Medical Institute (IML) and, as soon as concluded, will be analyzed by the police authority to assist in clarifying the case.
The Military Police reiterated, through their statement and the SSP, that it is a legalistic institution that does not tolerate excesses or deviations of conduct. He also stated that any complaint of abuse by his agents is strictly investigated by the institution’s corregedoria.
