190 million euros in projects to be financed by the EIB

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is financing projects with a high social and economic impact in the field of Higher Education, which concern areas of the Region, continuing its firm support for public and private investments which have the potential to bring positive changes in across the country and strengthen social cohesion, as the Ministries of Finance, Development and Education state in a joint statement.

In particular, the EIB approved a proposal for the financing of projects amounting to 190 million euros, promoted by Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and related to the design, financing, construction and technical management of student and other building facilities [συμπεριλαμβανομένων εργαστηρίων έρευνας και ανάπτυξης (R&D)] for Greek universities. Specifically, these are the following:
-School accommodation facilities of the University of Crete.
-Facilities of student dormitories, teachers, research and other infrastructures of the Democritus University of Thrace.
-Facilities of student dormitories and other educational and research facilities of the University of Thessaly, in Volos and Lamia.

The above projects are part of a wider network of PPP programs for the multifaceted upgrade of Greek University Institutions, with a total budget of 445 million euros, which is in progress.

Their implementation is expected to have many, important and multilevel benefits, both for local communities and for the country as a whole. Through them, the student housing is strengthened, the accessibility to the studies is facilitated and the quality of the Universities that are outside the big economic and population nodes of Greece, that is, of Attica and Central Macedonia, is further upgraded.

The new, modern teaching and learning spaces that will be created, on the one hand, will enable students from low-income families to access higher education, significantly reducing the cost of living in these areas, on the other hand, will improve the quality of higher education. in the Region, increasing overall employment prospects.

These are therefore projects that help reduce overcrowding and activities in the two major urban centers, enhance regional development and reduce social inequalities, helping to promote balanced economic, social and spatial development.

The Greek Government continues the close and highly constructive cooperation it has developed with the EIB in recent years, in order to ensure the financing of high value-added projects for the whole country. Projects that promote social cohesion, enhance local and regional development, offer new opportunities and contribute substantially to the strong, sustainable and inclusive development of the whole country.
