“196 humanitarian workers were killed in Gaza and we want to know why”, says UN Secretary-General

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said this Friday (5) that at least 196 humanitarian workers were killed in the war in Gaza.

“The Israeli government has recognized mistakes,” said Guterres. “But the essential problem is not who made the mistakes, it is the military strategy and procedures in place that allow these mistakes to continually multiply,” he added.

“Fixing these flaws requires independent investigations and significant, measurable changes on the ground,” he said.

“196 aid workers were killed and we want to know why each of them was killed,” he added.

Guterres also stated that he sincerely hopes that Israel quickly and effectively increases aid access to the Gaza Strip, describing the situation in the Palestinian territory after six months of war as “absolutely desperate.”

Israel approved the reopening of the Erez crossing into northern Gaza and the temporary use of Israel's southern port of Ashdod after US President Joe Biden demanded measures to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying they could conditions would be imposed on US support for Israel if this did not happen.

“When the doors to aid are closed, the doors to hunger are opened. More than half the population – more than a million people – face catastrophic hunger. Children in Gaza today die for lack of food and water,” Guterres told reporters.

“This is incomprehensible and completely preventable,” he said. “Nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

Global outrage over the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million people grew after an Israeli airstrike on Monday killed seven people working for the US charity World Central Kitchen.
