2000+ people will be able to participate in VKontakte calls at the same time: why is it needed

Today, on May 17, the technical director of the VKontakte social network, Alexander Tobol, during the Highload ++ conference officially announced that group video calls with a huge number of participants by modern standards will be launched on the platform this summer – it will be possible to unite up to 2048 people at the same time. Thanks to such a significant number of potential participants, organizers of all kinds of entertainment or educational events will have much more opportunities to provide their content. For example, it will be much more comfortable to hold educational forums, conferences or even online concerts, and competitors simply do not have this opportunity.

The best part is that large-scale conferences can be held by large organizations with a whole list of speakers, as well as by each individual user who just wants to communicate with their audience or share content. It was possible to implement such an advanced tool thanks to the unique solutions of the developers from VKontakte:

“The restrictions on the number of participants in video calls in most services are due to the capabilities of browsers, the resources of smartphones, the bandwidth of Internet networks and available technical solutions. To overcome the barrier of 128 participants, we completely revised the architecture of our service and implemented many non-standard solutions for processing and transporting audio and video. This made it possible to reach a new level for social networks and unite thousands of users in one VKontakte call, ”said Alexander Tobol.

It is important to note that video calls on VKontakte provide the user with all the standard functions for which competing services usually have to pay, completely free of charge – there are no restrictions on the duration of the call, you can connect to the conference by an invitation link even if there is no profile on the social network, there is a screen sharing function, a “Raise your hand” button and the ability to record a call to listen to it later. And the developers of VKontakte presented their own advanced noise reduction – even if there is a noisy street around, cars are actively driving or neighbors have started repair work, the conference participants will hear each other perfectly. Group video calls on VKontakte were introduced in September 2020 – then up to 128 participants were supported. Soon, this limit will be expanded to 2048 people; you can use the service on a PC, laptop or smartphone.
