2021, the 10 battles for rights

Some have ended well and have led to important milestones. Others have remained bitter defeats. 2021 was a tough year for rights. If on the one hand the civil push was very strong, as demonstrated by the collections of signatures for the referendum on euthanasia and cannabis, on the other hand, politics has repeatedly shown itself to be distracted and distant.

One defeat above all tells it: the sinking of the Zan bill, the bill against homotransphobia that was approved in the House on November 4, 2020 and after a year of labor, arrived in the Senate. Here he stopped his journey towards approval, after being blocked from voting in favor of the “trap” by 154 senators, with 131 against and two abstentions. The photos of those moments, with the senators cheering almost as if at the stadium for having blocked a civilization law for our country, provoked an immense and indignant spontaneous mobilization. In a few hours the main Italian squares were filled with people free from the flags of any political party and united only by the desire to say that Italy is better than this.

Even the battle for safety at work was found to be ineffective. In 2021 alone, Inail recorded 1017 deaths between January and October. All died at work. Like those of the three workers who died following the collapse of a crane in Turin on 18 December.

2021 was the year in which we learned to live with the pandemic and in which we chose not to stop fighting for fundamental rights. As the wage parity, guaranteed by a law approved last October 27, then the freedom income, monthly financial support for victims of violence. The consolidated text for rare diseases: a first real important step in favor of families, together withsingle allowance for children, which from next March to March will replace household allowances, cargo allowances and other bonuses.
