2023 fiscal situation is relatively simple, says Guedes

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, said this Tuesday (22) that, “for prepared economists, the fiscal situation for 2023 is relatively simple”. When participating in the press conference to publicize the Revenue and Expense Assessment Report for the fourth quarter, Guedes said that if President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) had been re-elected, the BRL 600 Brazil Aid would have a permanent funding source with the approval of the tax reform, with the taxation of dividends.

“Popular Pharmacy, snacks, everything fits into a relatively simple and well-formulated PEC”, said the minister. Guedes also thanked Bolsonaro, Congress and the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for their support in seeking solutions and building paths to resolve various issues and problems over the past few years.

Paulo Guedes also assessed that the debate on fiscal policy in the country is contaminated after the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to him, “unprepared people” have been making wrong analyses. “Are there unprepared people wanting to falsify the fiscal reality of the country? How can someone serious and prepared talk about cursed inheritance?”, He questioned.

Guedes also said again that the Brazilian population should not believe in fake news who claim that there is a gap or fiscal irresponsibility. According to him, as the debate on public accounts is in the spotlight, a realistic view is needed, and he reinforced that the Central Government will register the first surplus since 2013. The estimate is that the accounts end 2022 in the black at R$ 23.361 billion.

The Minister of Economy also warned that a wrong diagnosis of the economy could lead to wrong decisions by the next government.

“The country can do a very bad thing thinking that everything has already been broken into, there is no such thing. Don’t believe in fakes, don’t believe in lies. The big problem is following the lie and believing the lie. With this, you make gross mistakes. Starting from the wrong diagnosis, mistakes are made”, said Guedes.

IDB presidency

The Minister of Economy also stated that, in the past, Brazil did not have enough weight and international influence to nominate an elected president for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Economist Ilan Goldfajn, former president of the Central Bank (BC), will be the first Brazilian to head the IDB, headquartered in Washington. The election took place on Sunday.

He assumes the presidency of the IDB in 2022, for a period of five years, after a campaign marked by political dispute and early elections due to an ethical scandal in the previous administration. As Broadcast showed, sectors linked to the PT, the party of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, even campaigned against Ilan.
