21.7% drop in hotel occupancy in Athens in the first 6 months

The first half of 2022 did not go well for the hotels of Athens, as emphasized in a relevant announcement by the Hoteliers’ Union of Athens, Attica and Argosaronicos.

As is well known, reports the association, the 5 months of 2022 “closed” for hotels with a 26.8% drop in occupancy, a 25.8% drop in revenue per available room (RevPar) and only the average room rate showed a small positive change (by 1.4%) compared to the corresponding five months of 2019.

The 6 months ended with a 21.7% decrease in occupancy, a 15.5% decrease in revenue per available room (RevPar) and a positive average room rate, an increase of 7.9%.

But also at the European levelthe conclusions for June indicate that Athens is still a city with low average occupancy (74.7%) with the smallest positive change in revenue per available room (revpar 114%) compared to its competitors, and its ADR increase of Athens is the smallest recorded (it did not exceed 22.5%).

So the data itself shows – at least for the hotels in Athens – that not only is it not in an ‘over booking’ status as it is implied in various announcements and we read in some publications, but on the contrary it moves with just a good average occupancy, not able to cover the ‘hole’ created during the winter by the current operating expenses of the companies and as many ‘obligations’ as are already distinguished as a ‘mountain’ for the coming winter, always with what is emphasized in a relevant announcement.
