240W USB-C is a near-term reality. Power limit extended as part of USB-C Release 2.1 specifications

The USB-C interface has brought a lot to the market that users have been waiting for. Including the ability to transmit a sufficiently high power.

Now USB-C Power Delivery means the ability to transfer up to 100 watts of power, and that’s a lot. But soon this limit will be significantly increased.

The USB-IF has issued a press release describing the Extended Power Range (EPR). And there is a new upper limit – 240 watts! This will be implemented within the USB-C Release 2.1 specifications.

Of course, with such an impressive increase in transmitted power, users will need new chargers and new cables (rated for 5 A and 50 V). At the same time, the organization says that all cables with EPR support must receive the appropriate marking.

With 240W of power transfer capability, you can charge most laptops on the market via USB-C, including many gaming models, as well as many desktop PCs without very power hungry components. For example, the new iMac comes with a 143W charger.
