THE Bulgaria will proceed to kill around 25,000 quail and destroy their eggs at an industrial farm near the capital Sofia after a highly contagious strain of bird flu was detected, food safety authorities said today.
The outbreak bird flu at the farm, located in the city of Etropol, about 80 kilometers east of the Bulgarian capital, was detected after reports of high mortality among the birds, the food safety agency said in a statement.
The risk from the disease to humans is considered low, but previous outbreaks in poultry farms have led to extensive bird culling programs to limit the spread, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.
