25th Conference ‘Energy and Development’: The role of RES and natural gas in the energy transition

The inseparable relationship between the energy sector, economy and development in Greece and SE Europe was highlighted for another year by the annual National Conference “Energy and Development”, organized by the Energy Institute of SE Europe (IENE) under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, on 1 -2 December 2021 in Athens.

The Conference, which turned 25 this year, was held in a hybrid format, with the presence of more than 78 distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad. These included representatives of the government and political parties, the academic community, executives of international organizations and companies, while important interventions were made by renowned experts and reputable analysts.

With the central theme “Energy transition and feasible solutions – International and regional parameters”, the Conference provided the opportunity for a comprehensive, global look at the current energy crisis. Energy producers and suppliers, traders and consumers took an active part in the discussions. In this context, the key role of natural gas and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and nuclear energy was extensively discussed. The presentation of the IEA World Energy Outlook 2021 by the senior moderator of the Organization, Andrea Petropoulos, was one of the most interesting moments of the event.

In the “Energy and Development 2021” participated with their positions and interventions, among others, the Minister of Development and Investments, Adonis Georgiadis, the President of RAE, Dr. Athanasios Dagoumas, the General Secretary of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Alexandra Sdoukou, the General Secretary of International Economic Relations and Extroversion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Giannis Smyrlis, the President of the Environment, Mr. EVEA, Michalis Siamidis. The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, also addressed a video greeting. Former Ministers Giorgos Stathakis and Giannis Maniatis also participated in sessions.

In addition, this year’s event hosted top executives from the largest – domestically and regionally – energy companies, as well as distinguished scientific researchers, representatives of social partners and academics from various countries in Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East.
