Altoona police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, the person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference Monday.
“At this time, he is considered our person of interest in the audacious and targeted murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, last Wednesday in Manhattan,” Tisch said.
Mangione was arrested on firearms-related charges, Tisch said. Detectives from the New York Police Department are on their way to Pennsylvania, where they hope to question the suspect more fully, he added.
The suspect was found in possession of several fraudulent identification documents, a U.S. passport, a firearm and a silencer “compatible with the weapon used in the murder,” Tisch said.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the case also confirmed to CNN that the man detained in connection with the crime is Luigi Mangione.
Investigators believe the suspect acted alone.
“We believe, so far — our investigation is leaning toward the idea that he acted alone,” Joseph Kenny, NYPD chief of detectives, said Monday. He added that the investigation is still ongoing.
Arrested while eating at McDonald’s
The suspect in the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO was “sitting down eating” at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania when a restaurant employee called police, Kenny said.
Kenny credited the information to the widespread dissemination of a photo of the unmasked suspect that the NYPD released last week.
“Fortunately, a citizen in Pennsylvania recognized our image and called the local police force,” he said.
Kenny said that, “at this point in the investigation, we do not believe he was trying to flee the country.”
Murder weapon may have been 3D printed
The man arrested in Pennsylvania had a “ghost gun” with him when he was searched by local police at McDonald’s, according to Kenny.
“He was in possession of a ghost gun capable of firing 9mm ammunition and a silencer,” he said.
Kenny added that the gun may have been 3D printed and that police will get more details after ballistic tests.
