The death toll of the riots that broke out in Venezuela after the July 28 presidential election has reached 27 dead, Attorney General Tarek William Schaab announced yesterday, Thursday 8/22, during the Supreme Court session that upheld the re-election of Nicolas Maduro. . A previous official tally, released on August 12, put the death toll at 25, 192 injured and 2,400 arrested. Mr Saab also said the prosecution would “deepen” its investigation into the opposition leader and her presidential candidate. Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia are facing investigation for attempted “usurpation” of public office and “conspiracy”. The supreme court yesterday upheld the re-election of Mr Maduro, who was declared the winner with 52% of the vote by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
