3 out of 4 Italians are thinking of having a child within the next 5 years

Births in Italy have been steadily declining since 2008. According to the latest Istat report, relating to 2020, the average number of children per woman is 1.24, the lowest since 2003. New births last year were 404 thousand, 30% less than 12 years ago. The average age at childbirth is 32.2 years, a constantly growing measure. They are data from an all-time low, since the unification of Italy.

Faced with these numbers, theContemporary Families Observatory promoted by Prénatal retail group, did a research with Bva Doxa to understand the propensity to parenthood by choosing people between 25-40 years old who are not parents, equally divided between men and women and by geographical area.

74% of those who are not parents plan to have children in the near future. Within the next two years for 45%. The respondents who have a stable job and who are between 30 and 40 years old say this above all. More women are inclined towards the family and those who live in Central Italy. How many children? 46% would like 2. 26% would like to raise their children in a medium-small town, perhaps not far from the sea.

The desire to build a family is the main motivation for 74% of respondents. On the other hand, to brake, there are economic and job instability (18%) and not having a stable partner (14%). Slightly more than half of the interviewed children are an enrichment, but 30% complain about the lack of concrete help for families.

For 54% of the interviewees the pandemic and the situation it has brought is not inviting to have children. General uncertainty (66%) and socio-economic uncertainty (64%) drive the fears of the interviewees for whom the fear of the health situation (52%) is greater than that of losing their job (42%).

There remains a problem that goes beyond the pandemic. Especially for women, children are an obstacle to their career. For 84% of the interviewees, a child influences “a lot and enough” in the career path compared to 28% of men.
