3 tips to follow if you feel overwhelmed by social media

On social media, everyone is happy, always. So it seems, at least. While you navigate normal things like work, rent, shopping, cleaning and medical visits, the lives of others appear sparkling: dream holidays, dinners out, lots of friends, wonderful houses in the center, expensive clothes on sculpted bodies. Rationally you know that no one leads a perfect life, and that on social media everyone shows only a very small part of themselves – on the other hand you do too, right? – and yet, sometimes, you can’t help but feel at fault.

What to do when you feel like you are overwhelmed by all this? There are no universal solutions, but here are some tips that I think and hope will help you.

Stop following those who don’t make you feel good
In real life it is essential to surround yourself with people who do not empty us but who, on the contrary, recharge us with positive energy. Well, the same goes for social media too: just press the “unfollow” button and stop following those who make you feel inadequate for any reason. Think of it as a small act of kindness to yourself.

Take a break
In some cases, the best thing you can do is take a break from social media. I know it’s not easy at all, accustomed as we are to scrolling Instagram, TikTok and company, but to gain is your mental well-being. It is called “digital detox” and an ever-increasing number of studies and research confirm that, from time to time, it is a real cure-all. Anyone who loves you still knows where to find you. Does the rest really matter?

Establish schedules and rules
If stopping using social media for a while seems like too drastic a solution, you can always set timetables and small, simple rules to stick to. A few examples? Do not enter social networks in the evening before going to bed, dedicating that time to reading a book; do not use the phone during the lunch break, choosing to accompany your pasta dish with a TV series or a podcast; set airplane mode while you are busy with other activities, so you don’t get distracted by notifications and don’t fall into the temptation to open them. You can do it.
