33MP and 4K 60fps 10-bit video recording. Sony Alpha A7 IV mirrorless camera introduced

As expected, Sony today officially unveiled the Alpha A7 IV mirrorless camera, replacing the Alpha A7 III launched in early 2018. So many have been tired of waiting for the Alpha A7 IV.

The A7 IV is similar to its predecessor, both in terms of size and layout of controls. Although there is one new one – a switch between photo, video and S&Q (Slow and Quick) mode. It completely changes the menu structure depending on the activated mode.

The novelty has received an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 3.68 megapixels with a frame rate of 120 Hz, there is also a movable display with a resolution of 1.03 megapixels on the rear panel – it is convenient to use it for recording vlogs. The Sony A7 IV features a 5-axis stabilization system with 5.5 exposure stops. The camera supports SDXC UHS II and CFexpress Type A cards. Interestingly, the autonomy, measured according to the CIPA method, is even worse than that of the A7 III: 610 shots versus 700 shots.

Sony A7 IV received a new 33-megapixel image sensor. The continuous shooting speed has not changed compared to the A7 III at 10 fps regardless of the type of shutter. At the heart of the camera is the Bionz R image processor with 759 phase-detection AF points and 94 percent sensor coverage.

If the Alpha A7 III captures 4K video at 30 fps and 8-bit color representation, then the Alpha A7 IV is much better in this regard – it shoots 4K video at 60 fps and 10-bit color representation. That is, at the level of Canon EOS R6 and Panasonic GH5 II.

Autofocus new items provide faster and more accurate tracking of the subject. In addition, Alpha A7 IV allows you to follow not only the eyes of people, but also animals and birds.

What about heating? Sony claims the Alpha A7 IV can record 4K 60fps 10-bit 4: 2: 2 video for an hour. In comparison, the Canon EOS R6 takes time to cool down after 40 minutes of 4K 30fps video recording. The Sony Alpha A7 IV is priced at $ 2,600, £ 2,400 or AU $ 4,300 (depending on the country). The novelty will go on sale in December (and in Australia at the end of November).
