34 people are rescued after being trapped in a floating block of ice

At least 34 people were rescued Saturday (8th) after becoming trapped in a large chunk of floating ice in Green Bay, Wisconsin, according to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 10:15 am, Brown County received a report that a large chunk of ice had broken off the coast of Point Comfort and that several people were trapped in it, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

In less than two hours, all people trapped in the ice floe were rescued unharmed, according to the statement.

“It is believed that a vessel that crossed the bay just before the ice break may have contributed to the destabilization of the ice,” the office said.

The piece of floating ice was about a mile off shore at the end of the work, and floated just over a mile during the rescue.

“Although the chunk of ice remained reasonably stable, its condition was rapidly deteriorating and breaking down as open sea water lapped at its edge,” the cabinet added.

Shane Nelson told an affiliate of CNN that he and Robert Verhagen were ice fishing for the first time when they heard a loud noise.

“It looked like someone had fired a gun there,” Nelson said. “We found it curious, we got out of our tent, we looked and some people were screaming that the ice was breaking up.”
