3D model shows details of a ship sunk more than a century ago; look

A new 3D model revealed Unpublished details of the sinking of HMS Endurance ship of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, which was found in 2022 — more than a century after the sinking .

The scan, seen from the CNN this Thursday (10), makes it appear that the ship, which sank after being crushed by sea ice in 1915, was miraculously lifted from the Weddell Sea to dry land in a single piece.

It shows dishes used by the crew scattered throughout the ship, as well as other visible artifacts, such as a boot and a flare gun, which remain on the deck, despite the ship being at a depth of 3,008 meters.

You can see a boot believed to have been worn by Frank Wild, Shackleton's second in command.

The 3D images were released as part of a new documentary called “Endurance”, which will premiere at the London Film Festival next Saturday (12), before being released in UK cinemas next Monday (14) and on Disney+ later this year.

The film, produced by National Geographic Documentary Films, is directed by Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin and Natalie Hewit.

It tells the story of Shackleton’s ill-fated voyage, as well as the expedition that discovered the wreck of the Endurance in 2022.

The recent expedition was funded by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT), which celebrated the release of the documentary in a statement last month.

“In addition to locating, inspecting and filming the wreck, our goal was to bring the stories of Shackleton and his ship to new generations,” FMHT president Donald Lamont said in the statement.

“These are stories of courage and determination that we hope will inspire people around the world with qualities of leadership and perseverance in the face of adversity,” said Lamont.

Before the Endurance voyage, Shackleton had already established himself as a polar explorer after a career in the merchant navy. He had to leave an expedition to Antarctica in 1906 due to health problems, but led a successful one south in 1908. His exploits earned him a knighthood, becoming Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1909.

The explorer’s latest Antarctic mission began with grand ambitions. He recruited 27 men, hoping to lead some of them on the first complete crossing of Antarctica by land, just a few years after Norwegian Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole.

However, the Endurance became trapped in sea ice and eventually succumbed to the immense pressures of the frozen landscape and sank.

Shackleton then showed his legendary leadership qualities by leading a small group through stormy seas to South Georgia, where they got help to rescue the 22 men who remained camped on the ice.

No crew members were lost, cementing Shackleton’s place in the history books.
